Uncertainties and Opportunities for a Just Transition:
Mapping Implementation in the Czech Republic
The European Union has set the ambition of carbon neutrality by 2050. The Just Transition Mechanism (JTM) is instrumental for achieving this goal while also addressing the social, economic and environmental impacts of the transition. Its success is largely dependent on the ambition, ingenuity and commitment at the level of the member states and impacted regions. How well is the Czech government translating EU goals into actionable steps for an impactful and sustainable transformation of the coal regions?
This report is the result of a mapping exercise focused on the current design and state of implementation of the JTM in the Czech Republic. Based on an analysis of the gaps, unresolved issues and inconsistencies in the preparation and implementation of the JTM, the report provides recommendations, ideas and concepts for a more effective, efficient and impactful just transition. It also holds the Czech implementation plan up to the mirror of sustainable finance.
The JTM is an opportunity to deploy various new financial instruments and approaches that should be considered by all actors and stakeholders.
